Over 50% of all mental health conditions begin by age 14, although most cases remain undetected and untreated. If left untreated, those mental health conditions will continue into adulthood and cause physical as well as mental impairments and limit their ability to live fulfilling lives. Among adolescents, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability, and suicide is the second leading cause of death in ages 15-19 years. All these statistics from the World Health Organization underline the importance and need for adolescent and teen mental health services.

During adolescence, from 10 to 19 years, there is not only physical growth occurring, but mental, emotional, and social changes are also occurring. Psychological well-being is crucial during adolescence to develop physical and mental health strength in adulthood. It is important that adolescents develop healthy sleep patterns, exercise regularly, and develop strong interpersonal skills, including coping, problem-solving, and managing emotions. Emotional disorders will impact schoolwork and cause social withdrawal, which will increase their feelings of isolation and loneliness leading to severe depression and possibly suicide. Behavioral disorders in childhood, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder can also impact their education and cause criminal behavior. Other risk-taking behaviors of adolescent mental health conditions are alcohol and drug use, and sexual risk behaviors.

Early detection is as crucial for mental health issues as it is for physical ailments. Early intervention can mean the difference between life and death when it comes to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Teen depression treatment and other adolescent mental health treatments must be a priority and parents must be aware of the signs of mental illness to ensure early intervention.
