Treatment | Again

Many people will recover from an addiction, then relapse and begin using drugs or drinking again. In fact, between 40% to 60% of recovering addicts will relapse. With a relapse, most people will experience feelings of shame and guilt and a despair that they will never recover from their addiction. Understanding that addiction, like other chronic illnesses, will never be cured, but can be managed successfully, is a vital step in the process to achieve long-term recovery. Returning to treatment after a relapse is crucial to regain control of your life. Giving up should not be an option!

Many chronic illnesses will result in a relapse if you do not continue to follow the treatment recommendations. For example, those with asthma and hypertension will relapse if they do not follow their medical treatment plan, and that relapse can kill them. Seeking treatment again is the only thing that will stop the deadly effects of their chronic illness. The same can be said of addiction; without returning to treatment, their relapse can become deadly. Choosing treatment is choosing life, regardless of how many times you have begun treatment and relapsed.

Aspire Counseling Services provides treatment that helps people to counteract the disruptive effects on their brain and behavior, enabling them to regain control of their lives. Remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol allows the brain to recover, the longer the abstinence the more the brain recovers and the less the addictive impact on the brain. When treating chronic diseases, there are deeply rooted behaviors that need to change. Relapse does not mean that treatment has failed, it is simply a part of the process for some people and means they need to resume treatment or try another treatment plan. Just because treatment did not result in long-term, successful recovery the previous times you may have tried it, does not mean it will not be successful this time.

The treatment at Aspire Counseling Services is designed to help with relapse prevention. Each person seeking help from the expert counselors at Aspire Counseling Services is evaluated and a personalized treatment plan is developed to fit their needs. One of the keys to preventing relapse again is learning to recognize the stress triggers that are linked to their drug use. Developing an ability to effectively address these triggers is one of the most important steps in recovery, and one of the educational components in Aspire Counseling Services’ treatment process.

If you have slipped and relapsed in your recovery, regardless of the number of times this may have occurred, do not use it as an excuse to give up and continue the addictive habits. Use it to help motivate you to commit to treatment with a renewed spirit. Contact your counselor and admit that you have slipped and are struggling. There will never be judgement from the counselors at Aspire Counseling Services for a relapse, only assistance in getting you back on the path to recovery.
